How to heal the Sacral Chakra

Working with the sacral chakra can be a lot of fun. This is the opportunity to give yourself permission to enjoy relaxing massages, take long, indulgent baths and focus on the hobbies and activities you enjoy.

If a voice in your head is telling you that you really don’t have time for this kind of thing, recognize that it is probably a puritanical old script. Ask it to move aside while you block out time in your diary for activities that you relish. The following suggestions are meant to be a pleasure, not a chore, and there is no pressure to work through them all.

Focus on orange

The sacral chakra is linked to the colour orange - a dazzling, zingy colour, like the fruit itself. There are all sorts of other hues across the orange spectrum that might also appeal to you, ranging from salmon pink to coral, amber and saffron.

Each time you notice orange, it’s a little reminder to focus on your sacral chakra. So see how many orange things you can spot during a normal day: from someone in the street with flaming Titian hair to a gorgeous sunset.

Wear something orange, even if it is a small item, such as an orange scarf (double points for anything slung over the hips). You could also put some orange soap in the bathroom (to remind you of the link with the element of water) or orange flowers in your bedroom (to represent sensuousness).
You could make a little altar or post pictures of orange items on social media, to focus your intention on this chakra.

Feed your Sacral Chakra

When you eat any orange food, set the intention to use its beautiful glowing colour to balance your sacral chakra. Look out for orange fruit: the citrus family of course, including satsumas and clementines. Other orange fruit includes kumquats, apricots, mangoes, peaches, nectarines, papaya, cape gooseberries, cantaloupe melons and persimmons.

For vegetables, try looking out for orange peppers, sweet potatoes, pumpkins and butternut squash; plus orange spices such as turmeric, ground coriander and paprika.

As this chakra governs our intestines, you could also try eating fermented vegetables. Each mouthful can contain trillions of good bacteria which help to support your gut. Try live sauerkraut or kimchi from a health-food shop; you can even make your own (there are entertaining instructions on YouTube).

As the sacral chakra is paired with the sense of taste, try appreciating every mouthful. As well as giving you pleasure, eating your food mindfully is good for your digestive system.

As this chakra is so strongly associated with water, also try drinking extra glasses of it during the day.

Heal your Physical body

Being kind to your physical body is a good way to connect with your sacral chakra.

LOOK AFTER YOUR BELLY

Although it may not actually make you feel pampered, if you pay attention to the organs in the sacral chakra area, they will feel happier.

A good start is to adjust your food, for a happy gut; drink more water, for a healthy bladder and kidneys; and if you are female, cut down on sugar and build in some relaxation, to help regulate your monthly hormones.

ENJOY MOVING YOUR BODY

It could be yoga, a dance class, tennis, golf, rock climbing, a martial art, clubbing or shaking a tail feather at your cousin’s wedding - it doesn’t matter what it is, as long as you move and you enjoy it (double points for belly dancing and martial arts that make you concentrate on your lower belly, and for swimming and making love).

BELLY BREATHING

This is a remarkably simple technique to bring movement to your sacral chakra area. It is good for your digestive system and very calming for your entire body.
1. Lie down somewhere comfortable.
2. Put your hands on your lower stomach.
3. As you take slow, deep breaths, allow your lower stomach to rise and fall.
You will know when you are doing the correct movement because your hands will gently rise and fall with each breath.
Once you’ve got the knack, you can do this anywhere, in any position.
